Love in Toyohashi
For reasons too unimportant to explain I
happened one night to be in
Toyohashi, a medium size completely non-descript
town about half way between the great metropolises of Tokyo and Osaka.
One of its few current claims to fame, I suppose, is that the Shinkansen happens to stop there...
I wandered aimlessly around the dead downtown at midnight, then, I passed a street
which looked like the towns night life... I knew I was in the right spot when a Chinese girl accosted
with me `hey handsome Mr.. gaijin, how about a massage'. Surprisingly she
grabbed me by the arm - Tokyo Chinese massage girls never do that, or perhaps I
just don't seem likely game to them.
Love
why second? what happened to the first one?
does the first love always fail?!
philosophical this one...
random street shot. all non-descript buildings, most covered with tile.
Somehow as a European I still can't get over the bathroom tile
covered buildings...
This round large guy intently typing into his keitai,
completely oblivious of all the love around him...
They have tightened up the law so its harder for russian girls to come work now,
but they still can come in on the 3 month tourist visa.
Reminds me of one time we went for a friends stag night and the cutest
stripper in the joint (well one of, it was an expensive place and they
were all very hot) was a computer science student from Estonia.
Our CEO was there, so we tried to get him to hire her on the spot, but somehow to no avail :(
Recently a friend got promoted to store manager after the last guy
quit. He tells me: ``Now I have 15 russian girls to manage, they drink too much and just never
listen to me!'' Had this image of an exasperated young Japanese guy shouting
at brawling drunk russian hostesses ``dzhevushki dzevushki!!'' as they completely
ignore him. And just last month his only concern was how to get
into their pants, management responsibility sucks ;-) ;-)

So as you can see even though Japan is considered quite racist, conservative,
and all that - when it comes to matters of the night its quite cosmopolitan!
Wow! Where do I start?
Pub - I believe `sawariman' touching man, but also word play on salariman
(nice. often these places will screw you
and when you are leaving you end up with a few hundred dollar bill with god knows what on it.)

sexy pub `skinship'
skinship is a japlish-word. too long to explain.

1 set 10,000 yen.
despite the drawing I am quite sure the girls inside are not 10 years old. in this area
at least japan, I think (hope and pray?!) is strict enough. (photos is another matter,
though at least convenience stores have stopped selling photo books of 8-12 year old
girls in tight wet swimsuits...)
beautiful young gay boys, unfold an alluring/charming/fascinating world.
Japan must employ more women in what's euphemistically called 'night work' then
any other country. Mind you 90+% of the 'night work' here is of a kind which does
not exist in the west, counter-bars, snack's, hostes bars, etc. the list of types of
establishments which have no equivalent in the west is very long. However they
all have a few things in common - they are not about prostitution, or even any kind
of display of flesh. The girls are all from normal homes, lots of university students
supplimenting their income. Quite a few of the Japanese travellers make their
living this way too. One of the few jobs in Japan where a young girl can work
for a few months make decent cash to then spend a few months travelling
around Asia or Europe.
The patrons cannot (this is Japan everyone knows the rules and
no-one goes outside the lines, polite country that way) touch the girls. Though
in the seedier establishments they can attempt to extract the girls phone numbers
through sweet talk to their hearts content. Some of the places even demand that
the girls have dinner with regular patrons before hand and bring them to the
store. However even then paid sex is a rare exception rather then the norm.
This is Japan, everything is organized, if one wants sex one goes to an establishment
catering to those kinds of needs. (Random factoid: Paid sex is actually illegal in
Japan, however it is legally defined as 'vaginal intercourse')
Mostly however men go to kabakura to either
drink with their buddies, or conduct business deals. The girls are there to pour
drinks and look nice. Kind of a pretty moving wallpaper. (And often just about
as rewarding conversation wise).
In fact most high level business
in Japan is still largely conducted in the super-expensive places in Ginza. There
the girls are all models or accresses, the clubs are thoroughly members only and getting
a membership is only realistic if you can get a very strong recommendation from someone
high up (cabinet members and captains of industry are best), and a night out starts
at a few thousand dollars a head.
In a way the industry is a modern version of Geisha.
Much of old Japan lives on, albeit in a warped and modernized form...
